Ways For Vegetarians To Get Protein

Ways for vegetarians to get protein

It’s one of the main complaints that many people have with the vegetarian diet. Sure, it can be great for the environment. Growing crops in a field is much better for the land then growing animals. It can also help to eliminate an individual’s risk for developing heart disease, as cholesterol is principally found in animal products. But one thing holds many people back from being a vegetarian: the fact that meat can be a great source of protein that can be tough to make up for eating other foods. Protein is a very important nutrient for the body that helps us to build and repair tissue. Luckily, vegetarians have plenty of different foods that they can fall back on to get their protein. In this article, we’ll work towards giving you a better understanding of the types of options that vegetarians may employ in order to get their body’s daily protein requirement.

Soybeans are one of the principle sources of protein for the vegetarian. Soybeans are a wonderful food for vegetarians because they contain not only protein, but essential amino acids that your body requires for proper functionality. Also, the protein found in soybeans is quite digestable by the human body; whereas we absorb 92 percent of the protein from meats, we absorb 91 percent from soybeans, clearly illustrating why so many people choose soybeans as a meat substitute. Tofu is a type of food created from soybeans, and there are many different tofu products available with a vast range of flavors. These days, vegetarians can get their required protein nutrition from tofu ice cream, soy milk, and even false meats made from tofu.

Luckily, if you aren’t a big fan of soybeans, there are plenty of other options that you may want to consider. The legume family contains many different sources of protein, with most beans and peas containing some level of protein. Also, few realize that there is actually protein in many different types of grains, including barley, wheat, rye, and wild rice. Nuts are often protein-packed, and many people choose to have peanut butter in order to meet their body’s needs. Almonds, cashews, hemp seeds and pumpkin seeds are all known to contain significant levels of protein.

Certain vegetables can also be significant sources of protein. Artichokes, potatoes, spinach, mushrooms, and zucchini are some vegetables that you may want to eat in order to ensure that you are getting the protein that your body needs. Most people are amazed to hear that you can actually get some protein nutrition from fruits, as well, with apples, bananas, strawberries, and several other different types of fruit containing at least trace amounts of protein.

As you can see, there are plenty of different ways that you can get your protein if you decide to cut meat out of your diet. If more people understood exactly how many ways you can get your protein as a vegetarian, they might be more prone to making the lifestyle change and becoming a vegetarian themselves.
